How is natural cork obtained?
Cork oak grows in the south of Europe, with a Mediterranean climate. However, it is most recorded in Portugal. This country, due to the rich deposits of natural cork, has become the main exporter of this raw material all over the world. Cork oak is distinguished primarily by its strongly folded bark, which is the covering tissue of the plants. Its dead cells are filled with air, so debarking the tree does not harm it, and the bark grows back after a few years. Then it is ready to be harvested again. However, it must be performed by properly prepared employees, because improper incision of the bark may damage the connective tissue and disturb the tree's growth.
